Although Milwaukee won’t be getting an MLS team, there is still a Milwaukee pro soccer team coming in 2025. This will be the city’s first pro soccer team in the United States soccer pyramid since 2002.
While the Milwaukee pro soccer team has yet to decide on a name and hasn’t even broken ground on their stadium yet, renderings of the stadium and stadium district are widely available. With so little information available and the United States soccer pyramid being different than most, here is all the information you need to know about Milwaukee’s newest professional sports team.
League and Structure
Milwaukee’s team will be an expansion franchise for the second tier of soccer in the USL Championship. There were 24 teams as of the 2023 season, but 29 teams are projected to be present for the 2025 season. Milwaukee is slated to be one of four expansion franchises joining in 2025, which includes USL Pro Iowa, JAXUSL and USL NOLA.
Unlike soccer pyramids in different countries, there is no promotion or relegation system with the MLS and USL Championship. While that does mean that Milwaukee will not be any lower than the second tier, it also means unless Milwaukee can pay a hefty expansion fee, and somehow build a stadium that can support an MLS team, they will not be in the MLS.
Location
While the exact location isn’t set in stone yet, fans do know where the Iron District MKE will be located. The stadium will obviously be a part of that district and with the stadium being the biggest part of it, fans can get a good estimate of where exactly the field will be located.
The district is slated to sit between N 6th Street, N 10th Street and W Michigan Street in downtown Milwaukee. It will be situated straight north of I-794 and straight east of I-43. With the location being directly off the freeway, it’ll be interesting to see what is available for parking as the district is landlocked with little room for parking as it currently stands.
Milwaukee Pro Soccer Team Name and Colors
At this time there are no indications of any Milwaukee pro soccer team name or color scheme. In fact, the team has asked the fans to help name the team. On the team’s main website, they give fans the ability to submit their suggestions for the team name.
Due to how many suggestions have likely been submitted, it’s impossible to even try to guess the next name or color scheme for the team. Judging from how similar teams have been named in the past, it is likely that the name will have something to do with Milwaukee’s heritage and history.
Milwaukee Pro Soccer Team Ownership
Like many other things with the club, the ownership of the Milwaukee soccer team is also up in the air. Currently, the team is jointly owned by Kacmarcik Enterprises and Milwaukee Pro Soccer. It’s very likely other companies or individuals will join the ownership group as the team and its vision become more clear.
With many prominent athletes like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Aaron Rodgers investing in Wisconsin teams in the past, it’s likely others will join in the ownership of Milwaukee Pro Soccer as well.
