Is Culver’s walleye or cod better? With a price difference, is one of these choices better on Fridays during Lent? Below, Let’s Go Wisconsin will do a taste test of the Culver’s fish fry and determine if the Northwoods Walleye or North Atlantic Cod is more worth it at its given price.

For most of the country, the Friday night fish fry only becomes relevant to Catholics during Lent. However, all Wisconsinites are within driving distance of a fish fry every single Friday. Pair it with a proper brandy old fashioned or maybe a Leinie’s Summer Shandy to get the full Wisconsin experience! However, when you are on the go or looking for a bit of custard for dessert, the Culver’s fish fry will do the trick.

Now that it is officially Lent, the Northwoods Walleye is back at Culver’s in both the sandwich and dinner form, which raises a very serious question — is Culver’s walleye or cod better?

The Let’s Go Wisconsin team has taken it upon themselves to solve these pressing questions. Below, I did a Culver’s taste test, putting the walleye and cod sandwiches against each other. Along with taste, we will be taking price and everything else that adds to the experience into account for our taste tests.

Culver’s Taste Test: Walleye vs Cod

I decided to go with Culver’s fish sandwiches for this taste test since 1) it’s cheaper, 2) it’s less food, and 3) it’s the same fish as the dinners. If you go with the dinner option, you will also get two sides and a dinner roll. The prices will vary, but the ones included in this article are from Culver’s Eau Claire.

Immediately, I was surprised that the North Atlantic Cod Sandwich came in a box while the Northwoods Walleye Sandwich was just wrapped in paper. I couldn’t care less that the walleye sandwich only had paper, but it was surprising that the more expensive and “premium” item was not the one protected by the box.

Appearance-wise, the sandwiches are very close. They are the same size and have the same bun. Both have shredded lettuce and tartar sauce on them as well. However, the cod sandwich also includes shredded cheddar cheese while the limited-time walleye sandwich does not.

So, if cheese is important to you and you want a more Filet-O-Fish vibe, definitely go with the cod. However, this again is something that doesn’t matter to me. How does the damn sandwich taste?

Taste-wise, it’s pretty obvious the walleye tastes better and is of higher quality. However, I took a bite of the cod first on purpose and enjoyed it. In other words, I wouldn’t have had a bad time ordering only the cod. Both could have used a little salt or lemon, personally, but you can always add that.

The Verdict: Is Culver’s Walleye or Cod More Worth It?

If you are ordering a fish sandwich, I believe Culver’s North Atlantic Cod is more worth it. Not only is it a good-tasting sandwich, but it is cheaper, it comes in a box to help keep it warm, and it also has cheese, so you save some cheddar while getting some cheddar.

HOWEVER, if you are going for the Culver’s fish fry and ordering one of the dinner options, there is zero doubt that the Northwoods Walleye Dinner would be the better option. The added cost is worth the higher quality and better taste. When the fish is hiding in a heavily-buttered bun, it truly doesn’t matter. It’ll be delicious.
