NFL Draft: 1968, Round 1, Pick 5 to the Green Bay Packers
Fred Carr was a fifth-overall draft pick who became the best player to wear the Green Bay Packers’ number 53 jersey. He made 112 starts at linebacker across a 10-year NFL career. Carr also totaled 13 sacks, eight interceptions and a touchdown while getting voted to three Pro Bowls.
2) Mike Douglass, LB (1979-85)
NFL Draft: 1978 Round 5, Pick 116 to the Green Bay Packers
While Mike Douglass was drafted by Green Bay in 1978, he didn’t switch to the Packers’ number 53 until his second year in the league. Douglass would go on to play seven seasons in that jersey, totaling 35 sacks, 10 interceptions and three touchdowns in 103 starts.
3) George Koonce, LB (1992-99)
NFL Draft: Undrafted in 1991
After going undrafted in 1991, George Koonce played a year in NFL Europe before arriving with the Packers. He played eight seasons for Green Bay, starting 102 games and winning a Super Bowl. Koonce totaled 554 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four interceptions and a touchdown with the Packers.

Currently, Jonathan Garvin wears the Green Bay Packers’ number 53 jersey. Garvin was a seventh-round draft pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he showed some flashes early in his career. However, with more talent added to the defensive line in this past draft class, Garvin must bring his best during training camp in order to make this roster.
