Throughout the NFL season, Green Bay Packers fans from around the world will come to Lambeau Field to watch the Green and Gold. The wait to be a season ticket holder spans decades. With that said, is it any surprise that 70,000 fans would come to Lambeau Field for Green Bay Packers Family Night, which is just a practice in August? I think not.
Packers Family Night is a tradition that goes back to the late 90s, giving fans a chance to see the team at a considerable discount. As has been the standard for several years now, tickets are only $10, making it one of the cheapest ways to get the Lambeau Field experience for the whole family. The practice itself has gone through several styles, at one point being a joint scrimmage against another team, a true scrimmage of offense vs. defense, and now is just another practice but inside Lambeau instead of across the street at Nitschke Field.
Packers Family Night Takeaways
Let’s start with some of the lowlights. While all eyes thus far have been on Jordan Love as he prepares for his first season as QB1 of the Packers, a true backup has not yet emerged. Sean Clifford, the fifth-round pick from Penn State, has gotten the first opportunity with the second string and looked a lot like a rookie. While he did lead a field goal drive in the two-minute drill to end the night, he also threw a bad interception on an overthrow intended for Tucker Kraft.
Danny Etling, the “experienced” arm, had some moments as well, but the Packers released him shortly after Packers Family Night.
Alex McGough, the 2023 USFL MVP and acquaintance of Let’s Go Wisconsin via Inside the USFL, now holds the QB3 job. He is extremely mobile and can make throws. Regardless, the backup quarterback position for Green Bay remains a question mark.
Highlights From Packers Family Night
The offense and immediate Packers’ future rests heavily on the right arm of Jordan Love. On Saturday night, in front of a sold-out Lambeau Field, Love looked the part of QB1. Struggling a bit in the first team period, Love was solid going forward. He found second-year receiver Romeo Doubs in a one-on-one period for a touchdown over Shemar Jean-Charles. Love connected with rookie receiver Jayden Reed in a red zone period for a score as well early on in the practice.
Love’s night was highlighted by a four-play, 75-yard drive in the two-minute drill. This started with a 30-yard strike to rookie tight end Luke Musgrave. On the next play, Love would connect with Christian Watson for a 20-yard gain. An Aaron Jones run up the middle would lead to Love finishing the drive on the next play with a touchdown pass to Christian Watson over DB Corey Ballentine. Love has been stringing along a lot of positive practices, despite what some national writers may say.
Also standing out was the tight end group. Luke Musgrave has worked with the first-team offense for the entirety of the offseason. He looks to be a significant upgrade at the position. Musgrave had the 30-yard catch in the two-minute drill, and he also made the highlights after leaving Darnell Savage in the dust in an individual drill. Fellow rookie Tucker Kraft has also been standing out as a blocking option. He had two big blocks on run plays. Kraft also caught a touchdown from Clifford in a team period.
Green Bay starts preseason action this week, traveling to Cincinnati for some Friday Night Lights action against the Bengals.
