Recently, the full 2023 Green Bay Packers schedule was announced, including opponents, dates, and times. This means that Packers tickets are out for sale as well, so reserve your seats and start planning your trip to see the “Green and Gold” this season.

As it currently stands, the 2023 Green Bay Packers schedule has six prime-time games, if we are including the early game on Thanksgiving. For a team that has a projected win total of just 7.5 games, that is a lot of time in front of a national audience.

However, when looking at the schedule a bit closer, we can see that Green Bay is actually at risk of losing half of the prime-time games on the Packers’ schedule.

What is Flex Schedule NFL?

After recent sports headlines, many people have taken to Google to ask “What is flex schedule NFL?” In past seasons, you may have heard of the NFL “flexing” games, which essentially means the league moves games to a different day in order to create a more appealing prime-time matchup.

In the past, only games on Sunday later in the season could be flexed. Now, the NFL voted to allow games to be flexed to Thursday Night Football as well, after Jeff Bezos was pissed about the crappy games on Amazon last season.

How Does Flex Scheduling Work in the NFL?

The NFL is allowed to flex a game into Sunday Night Football twice between Weeks 5-10, then anytime during Weeks 11-17.

Beginning this season, games can be flexed to Monday Night Football during Weeks 12-17, with the teams needing 12 days’ notice to make this switch. Also beginning this season, games can be flexed to Thursday Night Football during Weeks 13-17, with the teams needing 28 days’ notice to make this switch.

3 Prime-Time Games Could Be Lost on the Packers’ Schedule

Given the NFL flex scheduling rules above, the Green Bay Packers are at risk of losing half of their prime-time games:

  • Sunday Night Football, Week 13, vs Kansas City Chiefs
  • Monday Night Football, Week 14, at New York Giants
  • Sunday Night Football, Week 17, at Minnesota Vikings

With three prime-time games late in the season on the Green Bay Packers’ schedule, the NFL schedule makers knew exactly what they were doing. If the Packers are not playing well, the league could simply find a replacement. Here are possible replacements for these weeks:

  • Week 13: SF-PHI, ATL-NYJ
  • Week 14: BUF-KC, SEA-SF, DEN-LAC
  • Week 17: CIN-KC, LAC-DEN, MIA-BAL, NE-BUF

However, if the Packers are playing well, then that likely means Jordan Love is playing well. If Love is playing at a high level, then the NFL will want to introduce the national audience to one of the league’s newest young stars while also feeding into the storyline of the Packers’ Hall of Fame quarterback success.
