Best Players to Wear Green Bay Packers Number 78

1) Bob Brown, DE/DT (1966-73)

NFL Draft: 1964, Round 13, Pick 169 to the San Francisco 49ers

Robert Brown, or Bob Brown, was drafted by the 49ers, but he was cut multiple times and never played a game. He would join the Wheeling Ironmen of the Continental Football League, which is where Green Bay found him.

Brown played both defensive end and defensive tackle while wearing the Packers’ number 78 jersey. While he was very skilled, his weight often became an issue for him. He was already considered large for the time at 6-5, 275 pounds. However, he would “balloon” to over 300 pounds as well.

He totaled 29.5 sacks while winning a couple of Super Bowls for the Packers. Bob Brown is known as one of the most skilled Packers defensive tackles ever, and he was as tough as they come. In fact, he once played a game with a broken leg. He was also shot in the neck, then returned to the Packers and was voted to a Pro Bowl.

2) Ross Verba, OL (1997-2000)

NFL Draft: 1997, Round 1, Pick 30 to the Green Bay Packers

Ross Verba played his first four NFL seasons in the Green Bay Packers’ number 78 jersey before going to Cleveland. He began his career playing left tackle, but he transitioned to left guard for Green Bay.

3) Norm Masters, OT (1957-64)

NFL Draft: 1956, Round 2, Pick 18 to the Chicago Cardinals

Norm Masters was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals, but he opted to play in the CFL, had his rights acquired by the Detroit Lions, then was traded to the Green Bay Packers before playing for Detroit. Masters played all eight of his NFL seasons in Green Bay, where he mostly played left tackle. However, he started at right tackle in the 1961 NFL Championship, which was the first championship for Vince Lombardi.

Masters won two total with the Packers.
