There have been very few players to wear the Green Bay Packers’ number 5 jersey. This is because the number was unofficially retired to honor Paul Hornung. For this reason, we will only discuss the legendary Packer running back. We will also talk about why his number was only unofficially retired below.
1) Paul Hornung, HB (1957-62, 1964-66)
NFL Draft: 1957, Round 1, Pick 1 to the Green Bay Packers.
Obviously, Paul Hornung is the greatest player to wear the Green Bay Packers’ number 5 jersey. “The Golden Boy” is one of the best players in franchise history, and Vince Lombardi deemed him “the greatest player I ever coached.”
In his tremendous Packers career, Hornung won four NFL Championships, one Super Bowl, an NFL MVP, two Pro Bowls and two All-Pros. He totaled 3,711 yards and 50 touchdowns on the ground, 1,480 yards and 12 touchdowns as a receiver, and 383 yards and five touchdowns as a passer. Paul Hornung also converted on 66/140 field goals and 190/194 PATs.

Who Wears Packers’ Number 5 in 2023?
Currently, there are no players to wear the Green Bay Packers’ number 5 jersey. As stated above, this is because the Packers unofficially retired the number in honor of Paul Hornung.
Vince Lombardi made the decision to retire the jersey number in honor of Hornung. However, due to him leaving the Packers soon after the decision, the ceremony never happened. It was also not common to retire numbers back in the 1960s, which is why it is only an unofficial retired number. The reason for not officially retiring the number now, however, is strange.
