Did you know there are new Kwik Trip cheese curds? Those who don’t pay much attention may fully miss the new hot spot menu item. Yes, there have been cheese nuggets for some time which are, well, meh. Recently, many locations are now featuring new Kwik Trip Fried Cheese Curds.
Here at Let’s Go Wisconsin, if you’re going to launch a new cheese item, we’re going to try it. So, let’s jump into the food review of the new Kwik Trip cheese curds! Most importantly, how do they compare to the cheese nuggets?
Kwik Trip’s Cheese Nuggets vs Cheese Curds
Before we get into the Kwik Trip food review, we probably should breakdown what is different between the cheese curds and cheese nuggets.
The cheese nuggets at Kwik Trip have been out for quite some time. Even though most Wisconsinites will love anything made of cheese, these nuggets of mediocrity have left many disappointed. Nobody is truly wanting to “see them next time.” First off, these just don’t taste like much. However, the biggest factor is that the cheese nuggets are baked, similar to the cheese-stuffed spuds and other related items. The new Kwik Trip fried cheese curds are, well, deep-fried. These curds are battered and fried, giving you an experience that we are more accustomed to when ordering cheese curds at a restaurant.
Also, there is a difference in ingredients. The first ingredient listed for the new cheese curds is cheddar cheese curds. There is also a wheat and corn-based batter. Under the cheese nuggets, the first ingredients listed are milk, salt, and enzymes. I’m no expert, but these are probably similar ingredients to the cheddar cheese. However, it is interesting that it is not listed as a type of cheese for that Kwik Trip food item.
Kwik Trip Food Review: NEW Fried Cheese Curds
Enough of the nerdy research — how do the Kwik Trip fried cheese curds taste? Well, they are pretty darn good!
The main photo for this food review was taken by me, so you can see that you get quite a few curds in your box. However, I have read others online saying they experienced the opposite. For me, there were plenty.
The cheese taste of these fried cheese curds was better, in my opinion, than the cheese nuggets. They were hot, fresh, and crispy. They tasted a little oily, in a good way, and you could tell they were fried in clean oil (not always the case when ordering curds somewhere). Overall, they feel like an improvement over the cheese nuggets, but what is the final verdict as a standalone product?
The Verdict: Are the Kwik Trip Curds Good?
I’d rank this new Kwik Trip food item a 3.5/5.
Are they the best cheese curds in the world? No. I would love for them to have beer-battered curds available, but batter-fried curds in general is a big step in the right direction for me. If you are craving some fried Wisconsin gold, these will hit the spot. Or should I say hot spot? (sorry)
Right now, Kwik Trip is having a sale on these hot spot appetizers for $2.99. The price will last until March 10, 2025. To me, this feels like a good value. So, if your Kwik Trip has fryers at its location, then you absolutely should give these Kwik Trip cheese curds a try!
