Is Culver’s Walleye or Cod better? Let’s Go Wisconsin does its own taste test to help you decide which fish option to get!
It’s that time of year when the Friday fish fry becomes a big event. The brandy old fashioneds will be flowing, because many are unable to eat meat on Fridays during Lent. Without a doubt, Wisconsin has perfected the Friday fish fry. Hell, even our most famous fast food chain, Culver’s, has great fried fish to order!
For a limited time, Culver’s Walleye is back. This is exciting, but it also creates a conundrum. Which should you choose: Culver’s Walleye or cod? We did our review a couple of years ago, but this is too important of a topic not to revisit.
Let’s dive into the most important journalism conducted during Lent in Wisconsin!
Culver’s Taste Test: Walleye vs Cod
When we truly break down the debate between Culver’s Walleye vs Cod, there are a couple of different options. Both fish options have sandwiches and dinners, with the dinners including two sides, a dinner roll, and size options (prices below). The sandwich feels like the way to go for lunch, but it’s the same fish fillets for both the sandwich and dinner options.
Interestingly, if you order the North Atlantic Cod Sandwich, it comes in a box while the Northwoods Walleye Sandwich is just wrapped in paper. To me, this doesn’t matter. However, it was strange that the more expensive, limited-time sandwich was simply wrapped in paper. If you are bringing it home to eat, the cod sandwich may stay warmer since it is in a box.
Both sandwiches are the same size. They both have shredduce (shredded lettuce) and tartar sauce. Obviously, the fish itself is different between the two. Also, the cod sandwich comes with shredded cheddar while the walleye sandwich has no cheese. So, they could make you lean a certain way as well.
Obviously, the cod sandwich having the cheese brings McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish vibes. If you love that sandwich, you’ll like this one as well since the flavors are pretty similar. In terms of the Culver’s Walleye vs Cod sandwiches, the walleye tasted better and was of higher quality. Again, this was solely due to the fish quality. However, both were solid, and both would’ve benefited from a squeeze of lemon.
Culver’s Walleye vs Cod Review – Which is Better?
So, which is better: Culver’s Walleye vs Cod? Give us some answers!
If you are ordering a fish sandwich, I believe Culver’s North Atlantic Cod is more worth it. It tastes good, comes in a box, and is over a dollar cheaper. If you have strong feelings about cheese being on a fish sandwich, then obviously side with your feelings there.
HOWEVER, if you are going for the Culver’s fish fry and ordering one of the dinner options, there is zero doubt that the Northwoods Walleye Dinner would be the better option. The added cost is worth the higher quality and better taste. When the fish is hiding in a heavily-buttered bun, it truly doesn’t matter. It’ll be delicious.
