Aaron Rodgers joined the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday in order to bring clarity to his trade situation and make it clear that he is not holding up a trade. Rodgers intends to play for the New York Jets. Of course, this raises an interesting issue. AR12 has built a brand and a Hall of Fame career wearing the No. 12. This is a jersey number retired by the Jets, as Joe Namath wore it.
Joe Namath Says Aaron Rodgers is Allowed to Wear No. 12
The New York Jets retired Joe Namath’s number in 1985. This means no player on the Jets is allowed to wear No. 12 without permission from Namath.
However, on Tiki & Tierney, Namath said he would give Aaron Rodgers permission to continue sporting No. 12 if he joined the New York Jets:
“I hope it can come true but it’s farfetched: I know Mr. [Woody] Johnson’s trying to get a quarterback. If there’s a way he can get Rodgers,” Namath said. “I’m a big Rodgers fan, and I noticed that he wears number 12 of course….yeah, I want him to wear his number. We established ourselves and we’ve got a real respect for our numbers, and Aaron Rodgers, God almighty, yeah! It’d be great to have him in New York.”
Well, there you have it. Once the Aaron Rodgers trade to the New York Jets happens, it looks like he can keep the No. 12 jersey if he would like. This is an interesting situation with no shortage of storylines. For us at Let’s Go Wisconsin, we just want what is best for Rodgers and we hope he succeeds with the Jets.
